The foundation's financial instruments in 2021

Due to Covid-19, the Foundation's Board has decided to postpone its strategy seminar from 2020 to 2021 and to carry on the financial instruments from 2020 to 2021, with the one moderation that DKK 10 million will be transferred from AUFF Starting Grants to AUFF NOVA in 2021, cf. below. In general, the Board of Directors has chosen to continue to prioritise AUFF Starting Grants and AUFF NOVA in 2021. This decision has been made in order to strengthen the strategic recruitment of research talents, hereunder internationally, and to strengthen the growth potential and the strong ideas.

In 2021, the financial instruments will be as follows:

AUFF Starting Grants
AUFF Starting Grants for assistant professors, associate professors and professors will continue, and the total call and guidelines will be published in early 2021. The budget in 2021 is DKK 40 million.

AUFF NOVA
AUFF NOVA will be prioritised in 2021 with a budget of DKK 40 million. The continuing goal of AUFF NOVA is to stimulate the launch of bold and innovative research projects that are of high quality, but which at the same time will typically have difficulty obtaining support from other parties. The project must point to new paths and have the potential for scientific breakthrough. A total call and guidelines will be published in the first half of 2021.

Flexible PhD Courses
This financial instrument is targeted solely at flexible PhD courses, including 3+5, 4+4 and the research year, etc. The total framework in 2021 is DKK 15 million which will be distributed equally between the five faculties via a framework grant.

Publication Support
Publication support is targeted at international publications, and there will be an application pool in 2021 of DKK 2.5 million. Priority will be given to support for ground-breaking publications, with special focus on highly respected international publication channels, preferably large foreign publishers. Also, support may still be given to high-quality publications published by Danish publishers. Calls are expected to have deadlines in February and September.

Mobility
Again in 2021, DKK 5 million will be allocated for mobility. This is a pool for international activities, including both inbound visiting researchers and outbound mobility for the University's researchers. A call with terms and guidelines will be published in the spring of 2021.

Support for Holding PhD Courses, Research Group Meetings, Workshops and Summer Camps at Sandbjerg Estate
Applications can still be submitted on an ongoing basis. The purpose is to provide grants for payment of PhD course attendance, research group meetings, workshops and summer camps at Sandbjerg Estate, so that the course attendees’ own payment is reduced. The total frame is DKK 2.5 million.

Research Stays in ‘Møllehuset’ and the Apartment in Husumgade
Researchers can still on an ongoing basis apply for scholarship stays in ‘Møllehuset’ at Sandbjerg Estate or in the Foundation's apartment in Husumgade in Copenhagen.

Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies
Finally, the Aarhus University Research Foundation will continue to support the operation of the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies.

Other Financial Instruments:

AUFF Flagships
AUFF will carry on the new financial instrument AUFF Flagships, where a call will follow by the end of 2020 with expected appropriation in 2021. These are research projects of an extraordinary nature, with high visibility and a significant international impact.
